Abstract

Many people fear their own deaths. Most philosophers who have worked on this topic have assumed that a person's death marks the end of her existence, and have investigated whether it is rational to fear one's own death in light of this assumption. In my talk, I argue that many people fear their own deaths as something uncertain. I distinguish the case of the stereotypical believer (who conceptualises her death as a risky event) from the case of the agnostic (who thinks of death as deeply ambiguous) and investigate whether these individuals fittingly fear their own deaths in light of their conceptualisations of it. I argue that both the stereotypical believer and the agnostic fittingly experience something akin to fear when contemplating their deaths.
